The sky is the limit?

Two days ago I thought that 30$ per 100 g was a little bit too much. Then I discovered the yarn made of Arctic musk ox wool - 350 € per 100 g!
And when I could breath again, I googled and that's what I've found:

Guernsey Sweaters

The fisherman's sweater known as a Guernsey Sweater (or in dialect - gansey), was developed over 400 years ago during the reign of Elizabeth I when wool was first imported from England. It can be traced along Britain's coastlines, from the Channel Islands to the north of Scotland.

Traditional Guernsey Sweaters are hand knitted in five ply yarn and in blue (using indigo, the natural dye), to imitate the fishermen's natural working environment of the sea and sky. They are seamless, having been knitted 'in the round', using four or five double-ended steel wires or pins.

Some Guernsey Sweaters are plainly knitted, but others incorporate sea-related patterns, with cable or motif designs. These differ from knitter to knitter, and area to area.
Sadly, it was these unique designs which were used to identify fishermen who had been washed overboard, so they could be returned home to their families for burial.

Because the Guernsey sweater is so tightly knitted, the garment's design and patterns provide insulation, as well as water and wind resistance.
Wool is also highly absorbent and, because it releases water slowly, cannot easily be washed off the wearer's back. 

A Guernsey sweater is designed for longevity, with identical patterns on the front and back of the sweater. This means the jumper can be worn both ways if excessive wear occurs, such as on the elbows.
When families were so poor that clothes were repaired and routinely passed from generation to generation, the cuffs and sleeves would also be unravelled and re-knitted, often in a different shade of yarn.

Some fishermen were lucky enough to own a 'Sunday best' sweater for special occasions, and a lighter-weight Guernsey Sweater for the summer.
These would be knitted in three or four ply yarn, in a different colour of pale grey or fawn.

Vera becomes Sporty

It only took one day to finish Vera! She's still missing eyes, but my son is already in love with her and took her in his bed yesterday night. He calls him "Sporty", because this bear is a great sportsman, he can jump and summersault and do duck-walk... et cetera, et cetera!

I'm not very happy with what I've got at the end. The yarn (Regia sock yarn Hand-dye effect) is too thick for it and colour stripes contrast too much for the pattern to be seen well. But anyway, it's still a good and warm shoulderette. I'm going to present it to my sister-in-law to X-mas. She has red hair so this colour will suit her well.

Я не очень довольна тем, что получилось. Нитки слишком толстые для шалей, и из-за того, что полоски слишком контрастные, плохо видно узор. Но тем не менее, это приятный и теплый платок. Собираюсь подарить его золовке на рождество.

Beautiful shawl, nice and simple design. The yarn (Regia Lace) is made specially for lace shawls and you can see and feel it while knitting.

 When I knit socks with multi-coloured yarn, I rarely use complex patterns, I like the colour flow to be seen. So are these socks. Simple 1x1 rib, longer that I usually make, to make the cuff thick and comfy.

Short mittens, very soft and warm. I love this autumn berry colour.

And for Little Teddy I used normal hook and tunesian hook. That what looks like double crochet is actually a stripe crocheted vertically with common tunesian stitch. I was just improvising...

This one is made of another yarn... I've lost the label, but there were about 70% acryl and 30% wool. Soft and fluffy. Simple chevron pattern, knits and purls.

Homespun yarn

My homespun wool I've bought on ebay arrived today!

It's quite itchy. I've tryed to soften (and felt) it by washing it in different ways. So what I've got:

I've knitted some swatches of 14 stitches and 8 rows each.
It makes 11 cm/5,5 cm unwashed.

First I washed it in tepid water with mild soap and hair conditioner. It has become more fluffy and solid, and also softer. The size is 10,5 cm/5 cm now. My favourite one.

Then I washed another swatch in cold water using wool conditioner. It hardly changed its size (10,5 cm/5,5 cm). Wool stayed itchy, it only became a little bit fluffier. Not impressed at all.

At last I tryed warm water and hair conditioner. I rubbed the swatch untill it became fully felted. The size is only 7 cm to 4,5 cm now. It looks very nice! This yarn ist perfect for felting. And it seems that hair conditioner is also very good for felting wool.

Прибыла моя покупка с ибея - домашняя пряжа, целый килограмм. 

Она довольно колючая и жесткая, поэтому я связала несколько образцов, и постирала их с разными средствами, чтобы смягчить полотно.

Больше всего мне понравилось стирать в  мягком мыле и бальзаме для волос (нижний образец на первом фото). 

Также хорошо получилось полностью свалять образец, используя лишь бальзам для волос (последнее фото). Судя по всему, он очень хорошо подходит для валяния.

Ivy League Vest

Fair isle project, I'd started about two years ago, forgotten and brought back to life.
The yarn is pure merino ("Sidney" from Filatura Cervinia, Italy). The vest is incredibly warm, even more after I've felted it a little bit.

Knit like a Latvian

"Knit like a Latvian" mittens

Here are they - mittens, knitted from Latvian wool using Latvian traditional design. This was the knitting DIY kit "Knit Like a Latvian" which I've bought this summer in Riga. They are not my first latvian mittens and absolutelly not the last (because I'm crazy about Latvian ornaments), but they are the first ones knitted with real latvian wool - and I totally love it! So does my cat Sandy.

Это не первые латвийские варежки, которые я вяжу, и уж точно не последние (потому что я сама не своя по латвийским орнаментам), но настоящую местную шерсть я использовала впервые. Невероятно довольна ею! Моя кошка Сэнди тоже.
